Essential Components for Fire Safety
Fire barrier systems play a pivotal role in enhancing the fire safety of a structure. They are strategically positioned to extend fire-resisting barriers above ceiling levels, ensuring the same level of fire resistance as the underlying fire-resisting partition. It’s crucial to note that fire barriers offer superior fire performance compared to cavity barriers. As such, cavity barriers should not be mistaken for or used as an extension to a compartment wall.

Cavity Barriers: Cavity barriers are versatile and can be categorised into two primary types based on their size and application:

  • Small Cavity Barriers: Typically installed between the external facade and internal substrate both horizontally and vertically, these barriers are often manufactured from stone wool slabs or preformed strips

 

  • Large Cavity Barriers: Designed to provide compartmentation to enclosed spaces, such as under-floor voids or within expansive roof areas, these barriers can span several meters in height and width.

Open State Cavity Barriers:

These barriers are unique in their functionality. Positioned between different building elements, such as rain screen cladding, they remain open in their dormant state, facilitating the free movement of air for ventilation purposes. However, in the event of a fire, these barriers react to prevent the spread of flames and smoke.
